Angelina Bong was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2012. Fibro Takes Flight is her first solo collection of poems. A vivid account of living with fibromyalgia, these poems are honest expressions of her intimate struggles, her raw emotions, her challenges as an artist and a writer and her views of life through myriad perspectives. They also explore how art and poetry help her cope with her invisible illness and how she finds treasures through these periods, finding peace and acceptance in overcoming the darkness in her life.
Her contemplations celebrate life in all its colours, including grief, identity crisis and the simple pleasures of daily living.
This is a book where chronic pain in mind, body, heart and soul meets meaning, purpose and hope.
About the Author and Illustrator
Angelina Bong is a Malaysian poet and visual artist with a background in Fashion. She represented Malaysia at the 3rd Delphic Games 2009, South Korea in the Lingual Art-Poetry category. Since then, she has read and performed physically in Malaysia, South Africa, Botswana, UK, Australia, India, Brunei, Egypt and Japan with poems translated into Korean, Malayalam, Japanese, French, Arabic and Malay. She is published online and in print including several poetry anthologies. She held her first solo Art & Poetry exhibition abroad after completing a 7-week writing-art residency at Toji Cultural Foundation, Wonju, South Korea in 2018. Her 2020 poem won the Poetry – Adult category of George Town Literary Festival’s ‘Wake Me Up When This is Over’ contest. She is a core member of Wordsmiths of Kuching. Fibro Takes Flight is her debut poetry collection.
Angelina seeks the sacred in the ordinary and grandeur, both at home and in her travels, while celebrating diversity beyond borders. These contemplative encounters are expressed in her works.
Her visual artworks are mostly explorations of acrylic, mixed media, black and white ink illustrations and haiga. Engaging with community wherever she goes, she has conducted art classes in Japan and Brunei, orang utan art workshops for rural kids with Wildlife Conservation Society, live painting performances and etc. She is currently the Secretary of the Sarawak Artists Society. She sells most of her art online and by commission; occasionally paired with poetry. Her pieces now reside in 25 countries across the globe. She has participated in many collective exhibitions, a few art residencies and an international art camp. Since Covid hit in 2020, she started teaching Arts & Crafts online. The illustrations on the cover and in this book are by her.
